During my last year of studies, I got the chance to spend one week in Paris, discovering the world of the niche perfumes. One of them, really surprised me : By Kilian.


Kilian Hennessy created the brand in 2007. He slipped out of the field of Cognac to the niche perfumery. He worked during 12 years with the big ones like Christian Dior, Paco Rabanne, Alexander McQueen, and Giorgio Armani. Each perfume that he creates begins with a narrative like for example the collection “L’Oeuvre Noire” which is the reflection of a whole love story from the beginning to the end starting with “Invitation” light and fresh to recall the smooth feeling of a first meeting to “Les Liaisons Dangereuses”, strong to raise the burning passion. It is a well thought out strategy. All his perfumes are created to reach the finest quality; he understands “perfume as an art”[1], and each bottle is meant to last forever, when it's empty you can refill it.


He goes further and creates an innovative way of wearing a perfume: by wearing a jewel. In the jewel there is a ceramic piece, which contains the perfume, it offers an ideal solution for allergic people.


He smartly plays on emotional affect, because he designed a wonderful box that can be used after as a clutch bag for a party; and this one contains the perfume, it is the perfect gift.


Not only all the story-telling about his perfumes are terribly surprising and breathtaking, he succeeded to create a perfume that smells exactly like the "angel's share" in a cognac cellars. He adapted his brand to various places with “Vodka on the Rock” for Moscow and “Apple Brandy” for New-York... He even offers sometimes limited editions like during the Kuwait 50th anniversary, when only 50 bottles were created.


This brand is the perfect example to show that now brands have to be sustainable. But they also have to build a unique and strong identity, and on the top of it all include art in their brand value and their DNA.
